Tiger Army "Razor's Kiss Tour '07"

Tiger Army has announced a bunch of dates for their fall tour, the list is not complete as there are many shows still yet to be confirmed, but it is the most complete list to date. One a more personal note, one of the most exciting parts of this for me is the inclusion of Said Radio on the San Francisco show. Eric Ozenne, singer of Said Radio (also Redemption 87 and Nerve Agents), is like a force of nature on stage, and is amazing to watch. This comes from Tiger Army's Myspace blog:

"New Fall tourdates added - San Francisco & East Coast!

Several new shows have been added in the past few days, including SAN FRANCISCO Nov. 4th at the Fillmore, as well as various east coast cities! Because bulletins are not working right now, we're giving you the pre-sale password here: "beyond" Tickets for San Fran are on sale at Ticketmaster.com. Pre-sale ends today at 5pm, general on sale starts tomorrow, Saturday! Don't miss this show with Street Dogs and Said Radio (an amazing new band that features Eric Ozenne and Dante from the Nerve Agents)!

Many more dates will be added to this tour, if you don't see your city, please check back! Tourdates at TigerArmy.com is in the process of being updated, at this very moment the show listings on our MySpace profile are the most current!

Spellbound Record Release covered in "Bray People"

Bray band in action again Spellbound' to release third album

"Bray band, Spellbound, is to launch its third album, Eleven Deadly Sins, in Katie Gallaghers on Saturday, July 28, 20 years to the day after introducing their first album at the same venue.

Some readers will recall that the rockabilly band was regularly lauded in this paper in the 1980s in Tony Murphy's music column, On The Music Beat.

Having played their first ever gig at at a flood aid concert in Bray, Spellbound decided to head directly to mainland Europe, where their 1988 debut album, Mystical Madness, was very well received and notched up many thousands in sales, but never released in their home country.

The boys blazed a brief trail across the rockabilly and psychobilly festivals of Germany and Scandinavia before, it seemed, vanishing back into the Hellfire' woods of County Wicklow.

The original line up comprised Frankie hayes, vocals, Adrian Hayes, drums, Anto hayes, guitar, and Lar Doyle on the double bass.

They were well know faces on the music scene in Bray, and played regularly in the festivals.

As things got busier for the band they drafted in Dave McDonnell on lead guitar as Anto had other commitments.

The boys then headed to the states in 1990 for a string of shows but ass time moved on and other commitments emerged the band members married and settled in Bray and were devastated when in 1997 bass player Lar died.

Tentative moves toward a re-union were made in 2003 when guitarist friend Doyley (Klingonz, Demented are Go) contacted the Hayes brothers to inform them that copies of Mystical Madness' appeared to be changing hands on the internet for astronomical sums. If they could find a bass player, he said, he would book them some shows.

They drafted in Simon Farrell from greystones and the line-up was complete.

Returning to Europe they have played Germany, France, Belgium and Spain and have performed some small shows in Dublin's Voodoo Lounge. They have now built up a big following in Dublin.

Drummer Adrian had to bow out due to other commitments and Spellbound is now joined by Ashford drummer Bryan O'Higgins.

Now, 20 years after launching Mystical Madness in what was the Doug Inn, Spellbound returns to Bray for a trip down memory lane for both the musicians and their nostalgic fans."

The Meteors in Prescott AZ Newspaper?

This is just kind of funny. The writer of this article decided to insert a little bit of psychobilly into an article about Perseid meteor showers, here is an excerpt:

"These meteor impacts are not totally unlike the effect of The Meteors, the original British psychobilly band, who play frenzied melodies about horror, death, burying the living and general mayhem. You can download some samples of their wares at http://www.kingsofpsychobilly.com/, including songs from their album “The F Word,” apparently named for the only adjective the band seems to have in its repertoire. If you'd like to attempt an impact crater in your own home town, you can book The Meteors by emailing them at otmapp-booking@gmx.deThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it . If you're one of those people who insist that email prefixes make some kind of sense, the prefix in this address is their crazed fans' mantra, “Only The Meteors Are Pure Psychobilly.”

Gaz Day putting together a new solo project

Thats right, straight from Gaz's Myspace page, Mr. Day wants to put together a new project, presumably psychobilly related, and put out a new solo project. Day's previous solo effort, The Gazmen, turned out an excellent EP in 1995 featuring Hodge and Alan from the Sharks and Alain Whyte, Day's Morrissey bandmate. This should be interesting, though I'm not a huge fan of Gaz's singing voice, all of the musical projects he's been involved with have turned out nicely.

Johnny Legend's Rock 'n Roll Wrestling!

There are some excellent bands on this roster, including the fantastic Three Blue Teardrops, who don't play to often anymore. For anyone in the LA area, it is probably worth checking out:

Cyclone "The First Of The Cyclone Men" on CD at last!

From Crazy Love Records:

Re-release of the first Cyclone album on CD. Originally released on vinyl in 1989, this album presents one of the hottest Italian Psychobilly bands of that time, beside the Boppin' Kids!

Tracklisting:

1. The Devil Is Knocking On My Coffin
2. Psyclone Shock
3. Bates Motel
4. Doctor Cyclone
5. Jungle Cat
6. Telegram Sam
7. Lonely Zombie
8. Funny Toy
9. Freddy Is Back
VIDEO: Jungle Cat live

This is a really good record and a prime example of late 80's style psycho. I can't afford it right now, but hopefully soon...

Frantic Flintstones "California Earthquake"

We got word of a new Frantic Flintstones EP to be distributed at the Hollywood Showdown. Here are some of the particulars from the Flintstones camp:

"The Cd appetizer is called "California Earthquake".
5 full power retarded FF songs!!!
Exclusive release for the U.S. end of august! Watch out on Holly Showdown and Texas!
Brasil posse - hmmmmm???? x39.gif

Strangulation was recorded in 2006, just a few hours before Chucks lungs muhed down. He had to be muhed directly in hospital.
The rest of the story is well known 03.gif .

All other songs were recorded in march/april 2007.

The five songs are the first course - let's say a gourmet appetizer to the upcoming new FF album (release beginning 2008).
Here's the track list for California Earthquake:

1. Certified
2. Depressions
3. Livin a life of sin
4. Strangulation
5. California Earthquake

Tripabillies, enjoy the muh!

Hicka!"

Later we got this word from Chuckers regarding availability:

"its very ltd.only 800 pressed...
will be on sale on the thursday-pre party muh..
then the showdown,.only for cali.....
we try n save a few for r brazil muhs...
but when its gone, its gone..
see ya soon...muh ahoi"

So, for the rest of you who are not well versed on the muh, here's how it plays out. Frantic Flintstones have recorded five new tracks for a very limited run EP called "California Earthquake". The EP goes on sale at the Hollywood Showdown pre-party and when it sells out the initial pressing of 800, it is gone. There may be some copies at the Texas and Brazil shows, there may not. We can always hope. When I hear more about the tour dates, I'll post all the info here.

CD Review: The Rock Tigers "Oldies But Goodies"

This is a review I've been looking forward to doing for several weeks now. Before I get into it, I have some confessions to make. I'm fascinated by South Korea, its culture, its films, everything I can find about that country I devour. The one thing I had been missing was Korean music, in the films you see hints of R & B style popular music and pop music, but very little indie rock, rock n roll, punk, etc... So I wondered if it even existed, I googled "Korean Rockabilly" and came up with the Rock Tigers. They looked right but it wasn't until I found their Myspace page that I knew I had to hear this band! I managed to get my hands on their two full-lengths and decided for the purposes of this blog, a review of the latest album, released April 19, 2007, was appropriate. Their first album is more straight up rock 'n roll, but the new one is an interesting mix. Anyway, on to Oldies But Goodies!

The Rock Tigers "Oldies But Goodies"

Oldies But Goodies opens the the exceptionally rockin' track, "Run (Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die)" and this sets the tone for the record. Not every track is nearly the stomper that "Run" is, but they all follow the same high quality standards set by the opener. A good, old fashioned rock 'n roll tune with a driving beat, loud Chuck Berry styled guitar riffs and excellently traded male/female lead vocals, "Run" is everything a good rockin' tune should be. This is but one of the many American roots styled tunes on this record from South Korea's first rockabilly band. From here, the record slows the tempo for a light bouncy tune called (if my translator is to be believed) "Dance, People Dance", sort of a swingy number that could send couples spinning around the floor without too much further encouragement. Here is where the record gets interesting. It is tough to know how much influence other rockin' acts have had on the band, given the Korean peninsula's long isolation from the rest of the world, but it appears that from here on out, their style runs along very close lines with some of the best in the world. Track three is called "그무렵 우리는", which, I'm sorry to say, I cannot find anything even resembling a decent English translation of, is a fast psychobilly number recalling early Mad Heads, who are one of my favorite bands. The song is tight and fast, and even more satisfyingly melodic than those early Mad Heads tunes, they use the dual lead vox to great advantage. The album then, once again, downshifts in a song called "Oldies But Goodies" which is another swingy rockabilly song. The album careens every which way across subgenres to achieve something startling, an album that fulfills around almost every corner. Track five finds the Tigers attacking country music with a song called, as near as I can tell "For One Day" (하루쯤은), the song starts out as a Johnny Cash styled tune with picking reminiscent of the Tennessee Two, and transforms somewhere along the way into a full blown rockabilly anthem. Again, the stunning lead vocals and incredible harmonies carry along completely unintelligible lyrics to make the song catchy as hell. Following that comes the one sort of let down of the album, a song called "Daytime Of Youth" (청춘의 한낮) which is a rather formulaic rock 'n roll song with completely unnecessary horns thrown in the mix. From there on out the band continues hitting on all cylinders channeling big name psychobilly acts like Mad Sin, the Horrorpops, and Nekromantix in their lighter moments. There is no metal on this record, but a good deal of rockin' influence complimented with splashes of punk, swing, and even blues. Other standout tracks include a track that could've been on the last Horrorpops album called "Welcome To My Wonderland", a pure rockabilly number called "Saturday Night", a Doo Wop number called "Moonlight Blues", and the closer, a great song that recalls some of the more romantic Nekromantix numbers called "One-Sided Love". While it should be abundantly clear that I am deeply in love with this band, they aren't for everyone. The Rock Tigers are a rockin' band with a very prevalent pop sensibility. I know a lot of psychos prefer their music to be of the type that will never be heard by those outside the know, but, if The Rock Tigers sang in English, I don't think mainstream popularity would be out of the question. Another hindrance to some might be the language barrier, although, many bands sing in their home tongues and still have decent followings, hell, Banane Metalik even managed to get a pretty good turn out in the USA despite singing only in French. Velvet Geena, the band's female lead vocalist and one of the rhythm guitarists, also could be a vocal doppelgänger for Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, and I could see her high pitched voice ruffling more than a few feathers. All possible petty annoyances aside, The Rock Tigers are a fantastic band with a bright future. Check out their myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/therocktigers

As of right now, there is not really a good way to find this record, but I'm working on that, so as availability becomes a bit easier, I will post updates.

Torpedo Booking Agency recruiting for Street Team

I got this message from Fussl at the helm of Torpedo Booking Agency, for those looking to help out the scene:

"Torpedo Booking Agency - Street Team
You love the music, the Bands and what we are doing? You want to do something that helps the Bands, Scene and, of course, you? Why not sign up for our Street Team? You job would be to print out/copy Flyers, and hand them to the people. Sometimes we print huge amounts of Flyers and Posters, and send them to you, so all you need to do is take them and hand them to everybody. Help promoting Shows, Tours, Release information, ...... at your School, Sports Club, or wherever you hang out.

Now you ask yourself why you should do all that and if it would be for free?!

Well, you should do it to help the Scene grow, and attract more people to great Music. Wouldn't it be fun to have more people at Shows, and maybe even make new friends? Carpool to Events that are not too close to your home......Roadtrips? Well, of course we'd like to honour your effort. You will recieve gifts from us and our Bands every once in a while. Stickers, Pins, CDs, Shirts, Posters, Tickets to our Shows ..... Of course we cannot give away free stuff to everybody with every Band/Tour, but everybody will get something every once in a while 03.gif

We even think of building some kind of online community for the Streetteam, where you can hook up with each other, post show-pics and share stories and stuff - but this will take a little while....."

Those interested can contact Fussl through the contact link on the Torpedo Booking Agency homepage

Today must be Horrorpops day...

Wow, more Horrorpops news keeps coming up, hopefully this will finish up this story for tonight. From Patricia Day's myspace blog:

"The long road back to where it began…

Rumors has been going around for a while now about HorrorPops, some crazy, some funny, some really stupid and some true.. and for a long time we didn't comment, we just wanted to keep things within our family, work on things on our own and just be HorrorPops.
It is true that Geoff Kresge is no longer a member of HorrorPops. As you may know, at the time Geoff joined HorrorPops he had also just started his dream project, Viva Hate. This was something he had wanted to do even while he was still in Tiger Army and was one of the reasons he eventually left TA. But we came and snatched him for HorrorPops before he could dedicate himself fully to this dream. Now Viva Hate have gotten to the point where they have a good fan base, gigs lined up and after two great years with HorrorPops, Geoff now needs to dedicate his time to Viva Hate and has our complete blessings and support in this. As of Nov 2006 we went our separate ways.
At the same time NoNo decided it was time to move on to other things and to dedicate more time to her family whom she missed constantly on tour. She had given us a heads up about her departure for some time, so we already had a good friend ready to step in and practice the song with Kamilla. Her name is Rita, she's from Philly, one hell of a tough chick and we can't wait for you to meet her.
Kamilla was determined to stay as a dancer in the band, but at the same time as our upcoming tour dates has drawn closer, her different projects also has become more time consuming. Finally last week she let us know that she no longer could continue touring with HorrorPops, but needed to concentrate more on the projects she's been working on and also would like to stay at home more than our previous touring schedule has allowed. Kamilla will still be involved in HorrorPops and has offered her help with finding a new dancer or teaching the dances.
It has been hard for everybody to make these decisions, but it was important that it was our decision as a band and friends and important to us that we weren't influenced by others demands. We are still all the best of friends, as we were when we started, and will continue being as we go on. Please respect that we kept this a family matter for a while, but we're sure you understand and we all hope we have your love and support in these matters.

So we took the long road back to where we started in '96… a three piece band, just Kim, Henrik and Patricia and that's how we went in the studio earlier this year. As a touring act we will of course still have dancers, after all we do enjoy to put on a show. But writing as a three piece again took us back to the feeling of our first album Hell Yeah and we're sure you'll recognize that both in the music and also in the titles ex: HorrorBeach pt2… There's also a follow up on Where They Wander called Boot2Boot and it is a dedication to the last squatted house in Denmark which got f@3ked in the ass by the state a few months back.
The new album is titled KissKissKillKill and was set to be released the 10'th this month. However, contrary to most believes we are on a small indie label with small budgets and we would have ended up competing with to many major releases. Together with Hellcat we decided that we would postpone the album and give us self some time off and do some small fun tours. The first of these will start in the end of August and will get posted as it gets confirmed. Here are the ones that are confirmed so far:

Aug 28: The Dome, Bakersfield, CA
Aug29: Alpine, Venture, CA
Aug 30: Downtown Brew, SLO, CA
Aug 31: Slims, San Francisco, CA
Sep 1: Hawthorne Theater, Portland, OR
Sep 2: Bumbershoot/ Ex Hall, Seattle, WA
Sep 4: The Domino Room, Bend, OR
Sep 5: Boardwalk, Sacramento, CA
Sep 6: Vets Hall, Santa Cruz, CA
Sep 7: House of Blues, LA, CA
Sep 9: House of Blues, Anaheim, CA"

So, in summation:

Guitarist Geoff Kresge has left Horrorpops to focus on his band Viva Hate
Dancer Naomi "NoNo" has left Horrorpops to spend more time with her family
Dancer Kamilla Vanilla Kresge has left Horrorpops to deal with her other responsibilities

Kim Nekroman, Patricia Day, and Henrik remain and have recorded an album earlier this year to be released at some undetermined later date, probably this year. The Horrorpops have landed a dancer from Philadelphia named Rita and will be auditioning for a second dancer next month. Not that confusing after all...

Horrorpops seek new dancer

From the myspace accounts of both Kim Nekroman and Patricia Day comes this nugget:

"HorrorPops are auditioning for a new dancer!

We’ve all gotten quite a few mails etc saying “if you ever need another dancer, I’m the one”, well now is the time if you really mean it!

We will be having an audition in Los Angeles on August 1’st and we’re looking for a female (sorry boys) between 21 and 100, willing and able to tour anytime anywhere even though the money often sucks and who has a lot of self irony and humor (very important!).

All you need to do is to email (no myspace mail or comments!) your picture, your contact info including mail and phone numbers, your age and a line or two about who you are and why you would like to be a dancer for HorrorPops to: Horrorpopsaudition@yahoo.com before July 28 and we will get back to you about location and time.

If you are asked to come to the audition you need to make up and perform a dance to a HorrorPops song of your choice. If you know a HorrorPops dance or part of it, we would also like to see that.

We are thinking about taping and posting the auditions online so you all can be there with us, but we will get back to you on that.
Cheers!

HorrorPops"

Geoff Kresge leaves Horrorpops to focus on Viva Hate

From Geoff Kresge's myspace:

"Geoff Kresge is no longer a member of HORRORPOPS.

Enjoy.

In early September 2004, it was officially announced that I, Geoff Kresge, had left TIGER ARMY, the band for which I had played the upright bass with for several years. I left the band on good terms, with the intention of pursuing other interests - namely dedicating more time to DEAD BODY RECORDS (an independent record label I helped launch), despite what the internet rumor mill may have you believe. Lawyers and "red tape" caused their share of difficulties with getting much accomplished on that front - not to mention a few headaches - so within a few weeks, I had a new band called VIVA HATE put together as a means to fill my newfound spare time. Shortly thereafter I was asked to join HORRORPOPS as a songwriter and guitarist.

I co-wrote the second HORRORPOPS album, BRING IT ON, with the rest of the band and toured for the entire touring cycle of the album. This left me precious little time to dedicate to VIVA HATE, which I had started BEFORE I joined HORRORPOPS with the intention of making it the primary focus of my energy. My thought was that I would have enough time between HORRORPOPS tours to get VIVA HATE up and running. I was wrong. I felt as if I was letting the other members of VIVA HATE down by not having the time to dedicate myself to the band and after a while I began thinking about leaving HORRORPOPS to focus 100% of my energy on VIVA HATE. By the time HORRORPOPS played the last show of the BRING IT ON Tour, just before Halloween 2006, in Long Beach, CA I had fully made my mind up that this was the end of another chapter in my musical career and that it was time to move on.

Dedicating 100% of my creative energy to VIVA HATE also meant that I would no longer be able to continue with my label, DEAD BODY RECORDS, so somewhere along the way, I quietly sold my share of the label and walked away from everything that came along with that project, including producing recordings for other bands.

Thank you to the friends and fans that have continued to show their support for these, and all of my creative endeavors. I honestly appreciate it. I hope that you will all continue to give me the benefit of you support through this change as well.

SUMMARY:

I am currently in VIVA HATE.

I am no longer a member of HORRORPOPS.

I am no longer a part of DEAD BODY RECORDS.

I am no longer a member of TIGER ARMY.

The answers are all right here.

Please do not message me asking for "the real reason" that I left HORRORPOPS or for any other gossip concerning this situation. I will not reply.

GK"

On a personal note, Geoff is a friend and I wish him luck, so far everything he's touched has been golden and I think Viva Hate is his most personal project to date. I can't wait to hear some recordings. I also want to say that I really respect Viva Hate's dedication to getting out and playing shows before releasing a record, I think that in today's psychobilly scene, far too many bands have records before paying their dues. Cheers.

Tiger Army "Forever Fades Away" video premieres

From a Tiger Army myspace.com bulletin:

"The wait is over! TIGER ARMY's new video for "FOREVER FADES AWAY," directed by Zach Merck, is LIVE exclusively on Yahoo! Music right now! And now... "

The bulletin also mentions a contest on Yahoo! music, but for now, here's the link to the video:

Forever Fades Away

Sick Sick Sinners in the Studio

From the ashes of Brazilian madmen Os Catalepticos, a new band has formed. Sick Sick Sinners features Vlad again on vocals and guitar and former Os Cats drummer Cox on bass. The band is currently in the studio laying down tracks for a new album. Specifically, Cox is tracking the bass parts. No word yet on a release date. This should be an exciting one, I'll keep you posted.

Ex-Hyperjax form A Sailor's Grave

Following up on a previous blog entry regarding the dissolution of Hyperjax, an announcement from Hyperjax myspace:

"As most of you know, the Hyperjax went their seperate ways a few weeks ago after deciding it was the best course of action.

However, all members of the band had intentions of continuing making music, and so are getting involved in new projects.

Bob, Cooley and Manning have formed a new band called A Sailor's Grave and are joined by ex-Hyperjax drummer Wally P. Parkinson.

The band is in its early stages yet, but after a few rehearsals things are starting to click and we're all pretty excited about venturing into new territory. As of yet we have not recorded anything, but plan to do so in the forthcoming months.

Please go and show your support and add us at: www.myspace.com/asailorsgrave13

We are currently looking to gig around september or so, and are booked to play the Psychobilly Bash at Birmingham on November 10th...

Cheers!

PS. Look out for Sam's new band in the near future as well. You guys are getting spoilt!"

Interview: Mad Marge & the Stonecutters

This is my first contributed item, and it comes from Mainy of El Diablo Fanzine. I want to thank him and welcome others to submit their work. I'm not saying everything will make it up, but I'll judiciously add content as often as possible.

Mad Marge and the Stonecutters

You’re causing a bit of a splash in punk and psychobilly circles. Are you deserving of it, what separates you from the rest of the pack?
Well, any band who writes music and decides to get up in front of a crowd of people and play their guts out deserves whatever outcome begets them. I don't think it really matters what "circle" they may spawn from, they are deserving. As far as the Stonecutters go, I don't think we're any different. We might set ourselves apart from the rest because there aren't many girl fronted bands out there making a splash in any scene, but we've only been able to do what we do and be where we are because we work hard. Other than that we're just like everyone else...

Opinions are polarised. Some think you ain't punk enough, others not psycho enough. Are they all missing the point? Do you think they should all just chill out?
We all pour our hearts into this group and if some people don't think we are enough of a certain genre than they are certainly missing the point. We are not trying to be a punk band, or a psychobilly band or a fucking hillbilly band... we are trying to take aspects of every sound that we love and make music. The problem is that everyone wants you to classify yourself and then they want to ridicule you for not having a strong enough sound of that specific classification. People are going to tell us we are not enough of whatever kind of music it is that they are "scenesters" of, but the bottom line is we are not about the scene. We are about the music, as cliché as that may seem, it is really what were about. If people did chill out and take a minute to listen to the music we might not be such a hard pill to swallow.

Why do you think people get all hot under the collar when a band want to extend their sound into other areas. Do you sometimes think there was an eleventh commandment that you missed “Thou shalt not mix genres and experiment with your own bands sound” type of thing?
That is a pretty clever anecdote you've got there and accurate at that. As musicians you either evolve or you die, there is no midpoint. You can't expect groups to play the same things over and over and expect it to sound fresh and original. Most of the biggest and renowned groups in any scene have expanded their sounds and influences to create new ones, that is how new genres of music transpire. People don't just one day decide to invent new styles, it happens as a process of evolution.

What’s the roots of the band? Musically where are you all coming from?
We all have our own personal roots and yet a shared admiration for punk, psychobilly, and rock and roll. All of us have come from pretty different musical backgrounds and I think it has really helped the song writing and the structure of our band. It is a pretty special thing for a band to come from such multi-faceted backgrounds and yet still come together on the same page.

And how did you all get together?
We have all known each other for quite sometime, playing in different bands together. It took us a while to get together to try and write some songs, but after that it was like riding a bike. We all knew it was right and everything had a pretty natural flow to it. It wasn't too long before everything just fell into place.

You have all played in bands before, but Mad Marge and the Stonecutters rise in popularity has been pretty rapid. What’s the secret, or is it just a case of right place, right time?
It's a matter of working your ass off...We all want this to work so bad and we feel like if we just get out there and play and let the audiences see and feel our conviction than it will all just get easier. It has worked out pretty good so far but we're still working really hard and it certainly hasn't gotten any easier!! There definitely is no secret...

The sound of the band is very accessible. Is mainstream success something that you would be ultimately aiming for? Let’s be honest, everyone would like to make a living and be successful doing what they love?
I think that is what most musicians aim for, your absolutely right, honestly everyone who is in a band, whether if they say it is for success or not, would love to do this for a living. We think it is important for our sound to be accessible and to expose the world to this different sound. Most people are so caught up it the trash that is so extremely popular on airwaves today, they forget what it is like to hear something new and exciting. Hopefully we can bring that sound and that feeling into the mainstream.

How has the reaction been to the release of your debut album? Is it garnering any airplay stateside?
It hasn't been widely released, so at this point we are still struggling to get the record out there, but to those who have been able to get their hands on it, the reaction has been pretty strong. It's a trip when we play shows and the kinds know the lyrics to the songs... I still get a kick outta that. We've had some airplay on some local and college radio stations in southern and northern California as well as online broadcasts all over the country.

You are obviously going to maximise on the work you have done so far to get to where you are. So what’s next?
We are planning a tour with the Rocketz in June to the North West (Hopefully all of that works out) and we are working out coming back to Europe in the fall.

Did the Warped tour give you more prominence?
I think anyone who plays on a pink U-Haul van gains more prominence, even if it is for those brief 30 minutes! We felt a little out of our element at first but once we realized that the people we had brought over to our hot pink van weren't going anywhere, we felt a little more comfortable. We got a very good response and got to get our music out to a crowd we hadn't had the opportunity to play for before. I think any band will tell you that warped tour is one of the best promotional tools out there.

As you become more prominent do you think that you will get any hassle about the name? What are you going to do if Matt Groening/Fox take a hissy fit and demands a name change?
We're hoping we'll never have to face that demon... but if it were to come about I suppose we'll just have to hire him a bunch of hookers or something...

You recently played London with some friends of mine (The Termites). How was it playing the UK? The response seems very positive. Especially with the younger audience?
The response in London was outstanding, from our perspective the crowd young and old seemed to really enjoy it. The entire show was really phenomenal, it was exciting to see the Termites back together and the Nekromantix were outstanding as well. It was just a really great vibe that night, (it was sold out, so packed as well) a lot of great bands and a great audience that really got into the show.

How important is getting out there, and playing in front of people to the band?
I would say it is priority, playing different venues and audiences is number one right now to us. What kind of impact can we make if no one knows who we are?

Have you any plans for heading back this way?
We are certainly keeping things open because we would love to come back to Europe. Nothing is absolute yet but we are hoping things will work out and we will be back by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

So far what has the highlights been?
Traveling has certainly been a huge bonus, but I would have to say that the people have been a big highlight since day one. We play with a lot of great bands and meet a lot of interesting and wonderful people that we probably wouldn't have the chance to meet living in such a small town. When we talk to the people who come to our shows or musicians in other bands, we realize that the whole music scene in general is full of a lot of good people that have amazing character and just want to listen to music and have a good time. Those people are hard to come by in this corporate congested world. We live in these days.

And the downside?
Shitty sound systems, monitors that don't work and being a non-smoker playing in a bar filled with smoke and maybe one or two oxygen molecules!

You want to finish with a message to any European fans?
I hope everyone who got to make it out any one of the Hollywood Monsters shows will come and support us and show us as much love the second time around, because you guys really made us feel welcome! For those of you in places we missed or if you couldn't make it out to a show but wanted to...
Make sure you come, introduce yourself and have a beer with us!

Hyperjax Split

From Hyperjax Myspace:

"The Hyperjax have decided to call it a day...

Its a perfectly amicable break up and everyone in the band will remain good friends - however, it had become very difficult to unify on certain decisions and we were having a tough time just getting everyone in the same place together at the end. This was not an easy decision but certainly we felt the time was right to move on.

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported the band over the past 11 years. Thanks to all the bands we have played with and thanks to all the great friends we have made from all over the world... Its been a blast.

Thankyou and goodnight!"

July

July is going to be a busy month for psychobilly, This is going to be a skeletal overview of some of the cooler items on the agenda:

Vans Warped Tour!

I think this is year 14 for this traveling festival. The big news is that Tiger Army will be on the main stage for the entire run. I know that there is a lot of division in the psychobilly world about Tiger Army, but whatever your position, you have to at least realize that what is good for Tiger Army is good for psychobilly, at least in terms of show attendance and record sales. A few other psychobilly acts have secured spots along the way as well. Mad Marge & the Stonecutters are going to be on the tour through July 29th, and I'm very excited to see them since I never have. I've heard nothing but good things. If your band is on one of the side stages, let me know since those are the only two I could dig up.

15th Psychobilly Meeting

This, by all accounts, is about the most fun you can have at a psychobilly festival. Two weeks of music and sun on the beach in Spain. This one in already in progress, but deserves a notice nonetheless. This years acts include:

BONE DADDIES (AUSTRALIA)
ZOMBIE GHOST TRAIN (AUSTRALIA)
PHARAOHS (UK)
SPIKE (JAPAN)
THEE SUSPENDERS (SWEDEN)
THE M3T3ORS (UK / GER)
KING KURT (UK)
REZUREX (USA)
DAMAGE DONE BY WORMS (GERMANY)
HOLA GHOST (DENMARK)
MAD SIN (GER)
FRENZY (UK)
LEVI DEXTER & THE CARAVANS (USA/UK)
PHANTOM ROCKERS (USA/ UK/ GER)
THE CREEPSHOW (CANADA)
MAD DOG COLE (UK)
FIREBALLS (AUSTRALIA)
THE TERMITES (UK)
PADDLECELL (GERMANY)

Can't beat that line-up! Someday I'll make it...

Bamboula & Season Of Nightmares

A couple of great new up and coming bands are also on the road this month. Bamboula are from San Diego and bring some cool sounds and a little something different to the mix and Season of Nightmares from the great northwest and are perhaps a bit more evil. Something for everyone! Tour dates are on their myspace pages.

I know there must be some records coming out this month, too. Drop me a line and let me know what you've got going on!

First Post!

Here we go. This is going to be a one stop shop for psychobillies.

We're going to have news, tours, reviews, and whatever other goodies I can dig up along the way. It seems odd to me that with as large a presence as psychobilly has on the internet, that there isn't a centralized place for psychos to go without digging through a forum to get their news. These are heady days for psychobillies. We've got bands touring around the world in places psychobilly has never been, we've got bands on national television in America, we've got a scene on the move!

I'll start posting some good stuff soon, but I wanted to at least introduce myself.

My name is Josh. My introduction to psychobilly was in 1996 when I saw the Hellbillys for the first of a couple dozen times. That show woke the beast. Shortly thereafter I took it upon myself to create a webpage dedicated to the psychobilly scene I was a part of on the West Coast of the U.S.A. The West Coast Psychobilly homepage was a bigger success than I'd ever dreamed it would be. I got e-mails from all over the world from fans and bands alike. I helped to set up a couple of really cool tours for bands like the Godless Wicked Creeps. I created web pages for a couple of bands, the Hellbillys and the Godless Wicked Creeps, who didn't have any internet presence before I threw my hat in the ring. I met a lot of people, fans and people in bands as well, and I made a lot of friends, many of whom I still communicate with pretty regularly. The WCP homepage got e-mail and guestbook signings well after I stopped updating it in 1999, I finally took it down in 2002 or so, because I had no time to update and I no longer lived on the West Coast, so it seemed kind of silly to me to continue. I live in Dallas, Texas now and don't get to see many bands, though, whenever they do come to town, I do my best to make them feel welcome and try to get people out to the shows. I still scour the web looking for cool new music and news about my favorite bands, and I thought this blog would be a good way to take what I've learned and pass it on. I love to hear new bands, I have stacks of demo tapes in my garage, I love to hear new stuff by my favorite older bands as well. If you are in a band and need some press, this might be a good place to start. Anyway, keep checking in, I have to find out if I can do RSS with this thing to help people keep track. Cheers and keep tuning in for the latest!
